The Hawk Fire, which started northwest of Reno in Nevada, remains uncontrolled as the flames approaching residential areas have raised alarms in the region. A large-scale evacuation order was issued due to the fire that has turned thousands of hectares to ash, and it was reported that 6 people were also injured.
The Hawk Fire, which started on Sunday in the U.S. state of Nevada, rapidly grew with the influence of wind and began threatening residential areas. As evacuation zones were expanded due to the fire affecting the northwest of Reno, approximately 90,000 people were ordered to evacuate.
SPREAD OVER 4,260 HECTARES
According to authorities, the fire that started near Hawk Meadow in the Somersett area spread over a wide area in a short time. It was reported that the flames have affected approximately 4,260 hectares so far.
As the fire advanced toward residential areas, teams intensified evacuation efforts, especially around Somersett.
STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as the threat to homes and other structures increased.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office also announced that new evacuation orders had been issued for the Somersett community.
6 PEOPLE INJURED
During the fire response, 3 civilians and 3 first responders were injured. Shane Akerson, Unified Incident Commander for the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, stated that the fire also caused power outages in the area, leaving approximately 5,000 people without electricity.
Authorities assess that the fire may have been human-caused. While numerous crews continue their efforts to contain the flames, evacuation warnings remain in effect due to the possibility of the fire advancing toward residential areas.
