For the first time in the Cyclospora outbreak in the USA, two people have died. While more than 18,000 cases have been detected across 45 states nationwide, experts warned that individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk, emphasizing the need to pay attention to food hygiene and to seek medical attention without delay if symptoms appear.
The first fatalities have occurred in the outbreak caused by the parasite Cyclospora in the USA. The Michigan Department of Health announced that two people with serious underlying health conditions have died. This marks the first recorded deaths in the current outbreak in the country.
MORE THAN 18,000 CASES DETECTED
According to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of confirmed or suspected Cyclospora cases across 45 states since May 1 has exceeded 18,000. This figure is considered the largest Cyclospora outbreak ever recorded in the country's history.
In Michigan, one of the states most affected by the outbreak, more than 11,200 cases have been reported since June 22. While over 190 people have been hospitalized in the state, the number of hospitalizations nationwide has surpassed 400.
TRANSMITTED THROUGH CONTAMINATED FOOD AND WATER
Cyclospora is known as a parasite transmitted through food and water contaminated with human feces. Among its most common symptoms is severe and watery diarrhea that can last for a long time. Experts warn that the disease can lead to serious complications, especially in the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
LETTUCE UNDER SUSPICION
Authorities are evaluating that many cases may be linked to chopped iceberg lettuce. Food safety experts advise consumers to prefer whole vegetables and fruits over packaged and pre-cut products, to wash produce thoroughly under running water, and to pay attention to food hygiene.
WARNING FROM EXPERTS
Experts state that the majority of healthy individuals recover from the disease, but prolonged diarrhea and resulting dehydration can be life-threatening, especially for those in risk groups. It is noted that early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment significantly reduce the risk of complications.
