After Ahmet Davutoglu announced the dissolution of the Future Party, Selcuk Ozdag, one of his closest aides, made striking statements to Haberler.com. Ozdag said he learned of his party's dissolution via social media, stating, 'I saw it after the declaration was published on Mr. Davutoglu's page.' Ozdag also answered the question about whether he would join the AK Party.
The dissolution of the Future Party, which is in merger talks with the DEVA Party, had a bombshell effect on the political agenda. The party's Chairman, Ahmet Davutoğlu, announced the dissolution of his party in a statement published on his social media account.
Selçuk Özdağ, the Deputy Group Chairman of the New Path Group and a Member of Parliament for Muğla, who is one of Ahmet Davutoğlu's closest aides, made striking statements about the dissolution of the party.
HE LEARNED OF HIS PARTY'S DISSOLUTION FROM SOCIAL MEDIA
Özdağ, who was a guest of Melis Yaşar on Haberler.com, made noteworthy assessments on the current agenda. Sharing his views on the split process within the Future Party, the debates over dissolving the party, and the future of the opposition, Özdağ stated that he learned of his party's dissolution from social media. Özdağ also answered Melis Yaşar's question, "Do you plan to switch to the AK Party or another party?"
"A JOURNALIST CALLED, I SAID 'I HAD NO NEWS'"
Selçuk Özdağ recounted that while working in parliament on Wednesday, a journalist called him and said they had dissolved the party, and he responded that he had no knowledge of it, adding:
"While I was working in parliament on Wednesday, with the General Assembly in session, a journalist called me. He said, 'You've dissolved the party.' I said, 'No, I have no news.' And then, the Chairman was supposed to meet with the headquarters on Thursday, I mean last Thursday. They hastily called us in and said, 'We have dissolved the party.' A statement was released, and when did I see it? I saw it after it was published on Mr. Davutoğlu's page. Mr. Ahmet Davutoğlu can step down from the chairmanship. Fine, he can say, 'I've stepped down.' But after doing so, we, including all the founding members dedicated to the Future Party in Turkey, from the party executive boards to provincial and district chairmen, would have held an assessment; 10 people, 20 people, over 10 or 15 days. Then, if there was such a consensus, based on that consensus, we could have said, 'We are dissolving the party' or 'We are keeping the party alive and going to a congress.' But there was no chance for that."
"IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT A JOINT DECISION"
Özdağ also stated that the dissolution decision was not a joint one, continuing his remarks:
"It's definitely not a joint decision. Already, when asked whether the party should survive or not... The party is unsuccessful, but there was a timing for this. If he were going to leave it, if he were going to leave this party, we were working on a merger with the DEVA Party; he could have left after we completed the merger. Or, if we had completed our merger with the New Welfare Party, he could have left, and told them: 'Yes, I have made a sacrifice here. I am stepping aside, withdrawing from active politics (I mean party politics), and today I am merging the New Welfare Party and the Future Party. And then, I am also calling on the DEVA Party and the Felicity Party to form an alliance here. Moreover, join with the Nationalist Democrats. If there is a need for me, a need for my experience, or a need for my knowledge, I am in Ankara or Istanbul, waiting.' Personally, I would have wanted such a message."
"IT COULD HAVE BEEN JUST A RESIGNATION STATEMENT"
Expressing that Davutoğlu could have stepped down and they would respect that, Selçuk Özdağ said:
"Now there is confusion, serious confusion. At least, well, his stepping down... He can step down, we would respect that. There could be a health issue, financial difficulties, or other reasons. But saying 'I am dissolving' required time. 15 days, 10 days... He cannot say it that way. The fact that he published that statement in his own name was also not appropriate. That statement could have been just a resignation statement in his own name. Then he could have signed his name, but this process was not managed correctly, in my opinion. Mr. Davutoğlu has made efforts for these mergers. He made very serious efforts previously at the Table of Six. He first said, 'Let's, the Future, Felicity, and DEVA Parties, cooperate together, then let's form a bloc by talking with the İYİ Party and the CHP,' we couldn't achieve that. Then he made very serious efforts at the Table of Six."
WILL HE JOIN THE AK PARTY?
Özdağ also responded to Melis Yaşar's question, "Do you plan to switch to the AK Party or another party in the upcoming period?"
Now we have a group, called the New Path group. We are four members of parliament elected from the Future Party here. And there are members of parliament from the DEVA Party and the Felicity Party. We want to keep this group alive. If, hypothetically, a member of parliament from here goes to another party, I wouldn't hope for it. But they might go, because they are left without a party; they have no party. Hopefully, they won't go.
"WE WOULD KNOCK ON THEIR DOOR"
But if something like that happens, we would knock on the New Welfare Party's door. Actually, what I want is this: Let the conservative democrats; the Felicity, New Welfare, and DEVA Parties, form an alliance together as a single party. On the other side, let the Nationalist Democrats form an alliance, like the AK Party-MHP, two parties, one roof, one bloc... To enter the elections nationwide with two parties and play a key role with over 100 members of parliament we would bring out. Whoever wins; to say 'hold on' to single-party, single-man rule or those who want to build a party state. Against the mischief of this system, to say 'hold on, we are the antidote, we are the lightning rod, we are the detergent here'; to pass laws in favor of the nation. Or to be able to say 'hold on' to decree-laws, executive decrees, or international agreements, whether made with dominant powers or other states. I want to see this. I want to see it transparently.
"HOPEFULLY WE WILL KEEP OUR GROUP ALIVE"
To be able to say this regarding that, and in a climate where Turkey has a $540 billion external debt, and in a climate where you borrow from European or American banks, where you take loans, where you borrow from England, we want to form a bloc against this. I mean, to be able to say 'hold on.' Turkey is not a divisible state; it is an indivisible part, and this is a thousand-year-old state. It is the state of the Seljuks, the Ottomans, and the Republic; to be able to say this. We want to do this, to strive for it. I believe we can create such a climate, and hopefully, we will keep our group alive."
