The US announced it struck Iranian radar facilities and drone command centers on Qeshm Island and in the Goruk region near the Strait of Hormuz. While Washington described the operation as self-defense, Iran's Revolutionary Guards declared they carried out a retaliatory attack. Tehran warned that it would respond more harshly if the US takes any new military steps.
The U.S. Central Command announced that an operation was conducted over the weekend targeting Iranian military positions around the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the statement, U.S. warplanes targeted radar systems and drone command-and-control centers on Qeshm Island and in Goruk. CENTCOM claimed the operation followed Iran's downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone reportedly operating in international waters.
The U.S. military also stated that they struck a drone ground control station and two kamikaze drones deemed a threat to ships in the region.
"LEGITIMATE SELF-DEFENSE" DEFENSE
The Washington administration stated that the attacks were carried out to protect maritime traffic in the region and neutralize threats to American assets. CENTCOM described the operations as "measured and deliberate acts of legitimate self-defense."
IRAN RETALIATED
Following the U.S. attacks, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a statement. The Revolutionary Guard's Aerospace Force claimed that the U.S. struck a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island in Hormozgan province. The statement said that the airbase from which the attack was launched was targeted and that predetermined points were successfully hit.
"THE NEXT RESPONSE WILL BE VERY DIFFERENT"
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps issued a clear warning to the U.S. after the retaliation operation. The statement indicated that if the U.S. takes another military step, Iran's response would be "completely different," signaling that tensions in the region could escalate further.
The U.S. strikes on targets on Qeshm Island and in Goruk, along with Iran's retaliatory move, have renewed military tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
