The World Health Organization has declared the new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths have been recorded in the outbreak.

According to data from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak in Congo's Ituri province has so far identified 336 suspected cases and 88 deaths. Two cases were reported in Uganda, while the rest were in Congo.

RARE EBOLA VARIANT IDENTIFIED

Health officials have stated that the outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus. Experts note that the lack of an approved treatment or vaccine for this variant complicates the response. The Bundibugyo variant has only been observed for the third time in history.

VIRUS SPREADS TO THREE REGIONS

The first cases were reported in the Mongwalu area, a region with intensive mining activities in eastern Congo. It was noted that the virus spread to Rwampara and the provincial capital Bunia after patients traveled to different areas for treatment. Officials indicated that high human mobility in regions near the Uganda and South Sudan border increases the risk of the outbreak spreading.

ARMED CONFLICTS COMPLICATE RESPONSE

Recent armed group attacks in the region have displaced thousands of people, complicating contact tracing. Experts emphasize that logistical challenges and funding shortages also pose significant obstacles to the outbreak response.

HOW IS EBOLA TRANSMITTED?

The Ebola virus can be transmitted from wild animals to humans. It then spreads rapidly among people through contact with vomit, blood, and other bodily fluids. The virus can cause severe symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and internal and external bleeding.

CRITICAL STATEMENT FROM WHO

It was stated that the global emergency declared by WHO does not mean a pandemic announcement like COVID-19. The statement noted that the decision aims to rapidly activate international support and funding mechanisms.
