In 2026, experts at the Zero Waste Forum assessed the connection between zero waste and circular economy.

A panel titled 'Defining Zero Waste: What Does Zero Waste Really Mean?' was held at the Zero Waste Forum 2026, organized under the auspices of the Istanbul Governorship and coordinated by the Zero Waste Foundation at Atatürk Airport.

Speaking at the panel, CEO of Circle Economy Hilde van Duijn defined zero waste as a strategy and stated that with advancements in the circular economy, societies can transform toward zero waste.

"WE MUST USE LESS MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS"

Pointing out that recycling and waste management issues come to the forefront when discussing the circular economy and zero waste, Duijn said:

"If we start with zero waste and there is also a circular economy, then we need to use less materials and products. After that, it's about being able to use products in the economy for a long time, meaning their reuse, repair, and reintroduction into use. It's also important to use renewable materials when making products. Finally, recycling comes into play to reuse these."

"EVERY PRODUCT MUST RETURN TO THE ECONOMY AND NATURE"

Cecilia Allen, Global Zero Waste Cities Program Leader at the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), stated that zero waste is a concept that has existed for 30 years. Allen reported that they aim for every product to return to the economy and nature and to reduce harmful materials.

Enzo Favoino, advisor for zero waste projects at Monza Park Agricultural School, noted that there is an important link between zero waste and the circular economy. Favoino drew attention to the importance of energy efficiency in achieving zero waste.

Atiq Zaman, Co-founder of Global South Nexus, pointed out that in modern societies, many products are sold beyond necessity, with technology products and cars being among the top examples.

Meanwhile, within the scope of the forum, panels titled 'Zero Waste and Climate Action: A Direct Connection', 'From Policy to Practice: Regulation and Local Government Guide', and 'From Marrakech to Antalya: The Need for Multilateral Leadership for Zero Waste' were also held.

The forum continues with panels on various topics.
