Recently, "carnivorous locusts" that draw attention with their giant size and interesting sounds were captured on camera by residents in Ankara's Polatlı district. These giant insects, which cause astonishment with their appearance, had also been seen in many provinces such as Istanbul, Edirne, and Bursa.
Giant carnivorous grasshoppers have also been spotted in Ankara. The species, scientifically known as Saga ephippigera and commonly referred to as the "carnivorous grasshopper," normally lives in agricultural fields, meadows, and forested areas. However, its recent appearance in various parts of Polatlı, especially near residential areas, has drawn attention.
SIZE CAUSED ASTONISHMENT
Most recently, the carnivorous grasshopper was sighted in Gümüşyaka neighborhood, recorded by residents on their mobile phone cameras. The grasshopper, striking with its size, also garnered interest on social media.
FEEDS ON HARMFUL INSECTS
According to experts, Saga ephippigera is not a species that attacks humans. On the contrary, it contributes to maintaining natural balance by feeding on harmful insects and other small creatures. The sighting of this rare species is considered an indicator of the region's biodiversity. Authorities emphasize that citizens should not harm such creatures and should contribute to the preservation of natural life.
