Claims about a building where soldiers were being held in Ukraine turned into a protest. During the incidents near Kyiv, tension arose between the crowd and security personnel.
THEY BESIEGED THE BUILDING WHERE SOLDIERS WERE HELD
In Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, a suburb of Ukraine's capital Kyiv, about 100 people gathered following claims that soldiers were unlawfully detained and mistreated in a building used by the National Guard. The crowd, which included people who said they were relatives of soldiers held in the building, demanded the release of the soldiers. When their demands were not met, the protesters tried to enter the building. During the protest, the building's windows were broken and nearby fences were damaged. Some protesters used smoke bombs as tension increased at the scene.
IT WAS ALLEGED THAT 40 PEOPLE WERE HELD IN THE BASEMENT
After the incidents, various claims were made about the condition of the soldiers inside the building. It was alleged that about 40 people were held hostage in the basement of the building, that the health condition of some soldiers was critical, and that medical teams were prevented from entering. Footage also emerged showing wounded soldiers being taken out of the building.
BUDANOV WENT TO THE SCENE
As tension grew, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov went to the area where the incidents occurred on Monday evening. Budanov announced that there were 14 soldiers in the building. According to the Ukrinform news agency's correspondent at the scene, after Budanov arrived in the area, the people in the building began to be brought outside. Budanov appeared before the crowd and spoke with the protesters, receiving information about what had happened. However, people waiting in front of the building continued their demands for the release of the soldiers.
HE MET WITH A 14-YEAR-OLD CHILD AT THE SCENE
Another notable development in the area where the tension occurred was Budanov's meeting with a 14-year-old child. According to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN, the child said he had come to the area where the incidents occurred "with his friends." Budanov helped the child contact his sister. Arrangements were then made for his family to pick him up from the scene.
INVESTIGATION INTO TORTURE CLAIMS
After what happened, Ukraine's Military Ombudsman launched an investigation. As part of the review, it will be investigated under what conditions the soldiers in the building were held and whether the mistreatment claims reflect the truth.
