STATEMENT FROM IRAN: FAILURE

The Iranian press described US President Donald Trump's announcement to temporarily suspend the Freedom Project, portrayed as a relief effort for ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, as a "failure." The semi-official Tasnim News Agency reported the matter under the headline "Trump backs down, the so-called 'Freedom Project' suspended."

WHAT IS THE FREEDOM PROJECT?

Trump had announced that as of May 4, they would begin assisting the passage of ships belonging to "neutral" countries stranded in the Strait of Hormuz and unrelated to the crisis in the Middle East, naming it the "Freedom Project."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during a press briefing at the White House, argued that they had launched an operation called the "Freedom Project" to rescue approximately 23,000 civilians from 87 different countries in the Gulf region due to Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
