Former Formula 1 driver Alex Zanardi, who lost both legs in an accident during a Champ Car championship race, has died at the age of 59.

ALEX ZANARDI HAS PASSED AWAY

In a statement made by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), it was stated that Zanardi had passed away, saying: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Formula 1 driver and two-time CART champion Alex Zanardi. His journey from the accident that changed his life to becoming a Paralympic gold medalist made him one of the most admired competitors in sport and a lasting symbol of courage and determination."

HE HAD LOST BOTH LEGS

Italian driver Alex Zanardi, who competed in Formula 1 in the 1990s, lost both of his legs in a crash during the Champ Car championship he participated in 2001. Afterwards, Zanardi continued his career with a Paralympic handbike, winning two gold medals for his country Italy at the Summer Paralympics.
