U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the National Guard sent to the area to intervene in the events in Los Angeles will remain on duty until the danger is completely eliminated. Trump criticized the security issues in the city, stating, "No one could manage Los Angeles before we stepped in." Meanwhile, California Governor Newsom responded to Trump by saying, "Democracy is under attack."
US President Donald Trump made statements regarding the ongoing events in Los Angeles at the White House. Trump criticized the Democratic leaders in the region, claiming that the city and state administrations did not take any action until the situation in Los Angeles was intervened.
"LOS ANGELES WAS UNDER SIEGE UNTIL WE INTERVENED" Trump stated, "Los Angeles was practically under siege until we intervened. The police could not control the situation. The police chief mentioned this on television three nights ago. They did everything they could, but they could not manage the events. The state administration did not call in the National Guard; in the end, we sent them."
"THEY WILL STAY UNTIL THE DANGER IS COMPLETELY ELIMINATED" Regarding when the National Guard in Los Angeles will withdraw, Trump said, "They will stay until the danger is completely eliminated. They will leave when the danger has passed." He noted that the destruction and arson incidents in the city continued until they intervened, stating, "If we had not sent support, Los Angeles would have been devastated today. I stopped the violence in Los Angeles."
"PROTESTS HAVE CALMED DOWN TO SOME EXTENT AS OF TODAY" Trump referred to the large-scale fires in January that burned numerous homes in Los Angeles, arguing that the state administration did not fulfill its duties at that time and stated that he ensured 'water reached the areas in need.' Noting that the protests have calmed down to some extent as of today, Trump emphasized that security forces would continue their duties and intervene in potential violent incidents.
CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR NEWSOM: DEMOCRACY IS UNDER ATTACK On the other hand, California Governor Gavin Newsom commented on President Donald Trump's measures against protests aimed at supporting irregular immigrants detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stating, "Democracy is under attack before our eyes. The moment we feared has come." Newsom made evaluations on a television channel regarding the protests in the state and the Trump administration's actions against them. He stated that Trump's military measures against the protests mark the beginning of a broader attack on the political and cultural norms that form the foundation of democracy, asserting that the deployment of the National Guard and Marines was not about suppressing protests, but rather a "deliberate war aimed at fundamentally shaking society and consolidating power in the White House."
Newsom stated, "California may be the first, but it is clear that it will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is the next target. Democracy is under attack before our eyes. The moment we feared has come." He claimed, "Trump has declared war on culture, history, science, and knowledge," alleging that the President has discredited news organizations and attacked the First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech. Newsom noted that Trump has also targeted the judicial system and law firms, stating, "These are the foundations of a regular and civilized society." Calling on all Americans to stand against this process and wishing for the protests to be peaceful, Governor Newsom said, "The thing Trump wants most is your loyalty, your silence, and your complicity in this moment. Do not bow to him."
WHAT HAPPENED? As protests aimed at supporting irregular immigrants detained by ICE continued in Los Angeles, the Trump administration had reacted strongly to the events. Many protesters were detained during the anti-ICE protests, and clashes occurred between security forces and protesters at times, with numerous vehicles being set on fire by some protesters, rendering them unusable. President Trump initially announced that he had deployed around 2,000 National Guards to the region to control the situation in Los Angeles, and later announced that an additional 2,000 guards and 700 Marines would also be deployed.
