A handful of Tunisian lawmakers threatened to walk out of a Friday parliamentary session to protest the government's failure to address a recent spate of flash flooding in the northwestern Jendouba province.
Eight lawmakers from the province called for forming a "crisis group" – headed by Tunisian Prime Minister Habib Essid – to inspect the province and get first-hand information on the flood damage.
MP Ahmed al-Mashraqi described the current situation in flood-hit Jendouba as "catastrophic."
He called on the government to present "radical solutions" to the problems of the province's residents.
Al-Mashraqi said the flooding had destroyed 18 roads in Jendouba, forcing schoolchildren to stay home, while thousands of residents had been left stranded on their rooftops to escape rising floodwaters.
Flooding in the northwestern province, induced by heavy rainfall, had destroyed local agricultural crops and damaged numerous homes, al-Mashraqi added.
