The Israeli army shot dead two elderly Palestinians it had detained in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza, after days of using them as human shields, promising to release them. The incident was documented in three photographs; the execution was carried out by the 92nd Battalion of the Kfir Brigade.
The tragedy of two elderly Palestinians, whom the Israeli army took from their homes in the town of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip, detained them, used them as human shields for days, and then executed them under the promise of release, was documented with three photographs.
According to statements by the head of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor (Euro-Med), Rami Abdu, and information conveyed by local sources, two elderly Palestinians named Nadi and Ali Marouf were tragically killed after being detained by Israeli soldiers.
The first of the photographs revealing the course of the incident has been in circulation since August 7.
In the frame in question, two elderly men are seen sitting blindfolded and handcuffed in the northern Gaza Strip, with a heavily armed Israeli soldier between them, smiling and making a victory sign.
In the second frame, leaked on October 28, 2025, there are moments when the elderly civilians, used as human shields, are walked half-naked in front of two soldiers over the rubble.
The third photograph shows the shrouded bodies of Nadi and Ali Marouf in the morgue of a hospital in Gaza after their execution.
“THEY WERE USED AS HUMAN SHIELDS AND THEN EXECUTED”
It is considered that the photograph showing an Israeli soldier smiling and making a victory sign between two elderly men sitting blindfolded and handcuffed at their place of detention in the northern Gaza Strip was their last frame taken before their execution on November 9, 2024.
In a statement made on the social media account of the US-based company X, the Palestinian journalist Younis et-Tirawi, who shared the photograph, said, “A frame believed to be the last known photograph of the Palestinians Nadi and Ali Marouf in their final hours.”
Tirawi, known for following the social media accounts of Israeli soldiers throughout the genocide, stated that it is believed the photograph was taken hours before their execution by Israeli soldiers in Beit Lahia in November 2024, and said, “A cruelty that words cannot describe. They were used as human shields and then executed.”
THEY GAVE A GUARANTEE OF RELEASE AND THEN SHOT THEM
On November 10, 2024, the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Prisoners Affairs issued a statement condemning “the heinous crime committed by Israeli soldiers against three Palestinian prisoners on the evening of November 9, who were executed by firing squad immediately after being released from the Gaza Strip.”
In the statement, which included the remarks of the commission’s former head, Qaddura Fares, the following was recorded:
“The three released prisoners are Haji Ali Marouf, Haji Nadi Marouf, and Hamza Muhammad el-Hatu. The released prisoners were let off the military jeep. When they started to walk a few steps to leave the area, Israeli soldiers opened fire directly on them, and they were martyred.”
Fares did not provide details about the third person, Muhammad el-Hatu, who is not visible in the leaked photographs.
The execution was carried out by the 92nd Battalion of the Israeli army’s Kfir Brigade.
According to the information conveyed by the Palestinian journalist Tirawi, the 92nd Battalion of the Kfir Brigade carried out the execution in question.
In his commentary on the first photograph, Tirawi used the expressions, “Israeli forces from the Kfir Brigade’s 92nd Battalion had kidnapped two elderly Palestinians from Beit Lahia, whom they used as human shields for several days before killing them.”
Tirawi noted that Israeli forces killed the Palestinians in question on November 9 near the Tevvam junction in the Sudaniya area after releasing them.
There has been no official statement from the Israeli army regarding this unit, whose name frequently appears in liquidation operations against Palestinians.
ISRAEL SYSTEMATICALLY USES CIVILIANS AS “HUMAN SHIELDS” IN GAZA
What happened to the two elderly Palestinians, Nadi and Ali Marouf, is not an isolated incident. News in the international press and Israeli media shows that the Israeli army has turned the use of Palestinian civilians as human shields into a systematic method throughout its attacks in Gaza.
The American Associated Press (AP) news agency, in its report dated May 24, 2025, revealed with information from some Israeli soldiers and Palestinian detainees that Israel systematically uses Palestinian civilians as human shields in Gaza. Many Palestinian civilians and Israeli soldiers who spoke to AP stated that Palestinians in Gaza are systematically forced to be human shields, sent into buildings and tunnels to check whether they contain explosives or attackers, and that this practice has been seen everywhere during the 19-month-long attacks.
In the investigative report published by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz on this issue in August 2024, it was stated that civilians were “systematically” used as human shields in searches in tunnels and buildings in the Gaza Strip, with the knowledge of the office of Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and senior officers in the military.
The magazine “+972” also reported that Israeli soldiers forced an 80-year-old Palestinian to search buildings with explosives strapped to his neck for 8 hours, then released him and immediately killed him.
