Alarm has been raised in Taiwan due to 'Typhoon Danas'.
WIND SPEED WILL REACH 137 KILOMETERS PER HOUR
Following the strong winds and heavy rainfall brought by the typhoon to the Taiwan Strait, schools and workplaces in the southern and central regions of Taiwan were closed for a day. In a statement by the Central Weather Administration (CWA), it was warned that the typhoon is moving at a speed of 21 to 27 kilometers per hour and that winds reaching 137 kilometers per hour will affect the region.
2,853 PEOPLE EVACUATED, 28 INJURED
In a statement by the Taiwan Fire Department, it was reported that the evacuation of 2,853 people living in the mountainous areas around the southern port city of Kaohsiung was carried out, and at least 28 people were treated for minor injuries. Landslides occurred in at least 10 areas and flooding was reported in 49 areas.
ROADS CLOSED TO TRAFFIC
With the increasing rainfall today, some roofs in the southern region were blown off, and billboards were destroyed by the force of the wind. As the wind intensified, the Taiwan Highway Administration closed the Alishan Highway to traffic after 6:00 PM due to the risk of landslides. Authorities warned the people of Taiwan to stay indoors tonight and tomorrow unless absolutely necessary, and urged those living in mountainous areas to be especially cautious.
LAST RECORDED IN 1986
The direct entry of Typhoon Danas into the Taiwan Strait is quite rare among all the typhoons experienced, and officials stated that only 7% of all typhoons in the last 100 years occurred on the Taiwan Strait route, with the last typhoon affecting the same region recorded in 1986.
