A tornado that occurred during the night in the Kepez district of Antalya shattered 2 containers at a housing estate construction site. Four of the workers swept up by the tornado lost their lives, while 1 worker was injured. Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, saying "We are facing a very interesting natural event," explained that the tornado was effective only at the construction site area and that no similar reports were received from any other location.
The tornado disaster that occurred in the Kepez district of Antalya during the night hours claimed lives. The tornado that formed at the construction site of a housing complex shattered 2 containers where workers were staying. Four of the workers in the containers lost their lives, while 1 worker was injured. Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin said, “We are facing a very interesting natural phenomenon.”
TORNADO SHATTERED THE CONTAINERS AND SCATTERED THE WORKERS The incident occurred at around 23:00 at the construction site of a housing complex in the Kepez district of Antalya. The tornado, which formed during a storm effective in the region, shattered 2 containers where workers were staying. With the force of the tornado, 5 workers inside the containers were thrown around. In the disaster, 2 workers lost their lives at the scene, while 2 heavily injured workers could not be saved despite all interventions at the hospital. It was learned that the other injured worker's treatment is ongoing and his health condition is good.
GOVERNOR ŞAHİN: WE ARE FACING A VERY INTERESTING NATURAL PHENOMENON Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin, who came to the scene and carried out inspections, made statements after receiving information from officials.
Şahin, stating that the tornado was effective only in the construction site area, used the following expressions: “2 of our workers died at the scene, 2 of our workers died at the hospital, 1 worker was injured and is in good condition. Right now, our searches at the scene continue, we are confirming, we are trying to understand whether there is another injured person or a body. We are facing a very interesting natural phenomenon; there was no tornado report at another point of the city, only here a cell tornado emerged, and again only here are we facing a tornado that shattered 2 containers. There is nothing in the nearby containers either. Today, at the provincial coordination board meeting, our regional director of meteorology made a presentation and said that we needed to be prepared for extreme events. In the evening, we were faced with such an event; I offer my condolences to the families of the deceased, their identities are being determined.”
“THE TORNADO DEVASTATED THE ENTIRE HOUSING COMPLEX CONSTRUCTION” Governor Şahin, stating that the tornado caused great damage in the construction site area, announced that a crane in the same area had also overturned.
Emphasizing that there was no connection between the crane overturning and the containers being shattered, Şahin said, “There is no loss of life or injury under the crane; the tornado has devastated the entire housing complex construction.”
THE TEAMS' SEARCH OPERATIONS CONTINUE Following the disaster, search operations were launched in the construction site area against the possibility of other workers being present.
While teams continue their work to determine whether there are other injured or deceased people in and around the debris, procedures have also been initiated to identify the 4 workers who lost their lives.
Governor Şahin stated that no tornado report had been received from another point in the city and that the natural phenomenon was effective only in the construction site area in question.
