Update - Egypt Brotherhood To Appeal 'Terrorist' Listing

29.03.2015 18:33

The Muslim Brotherhood will appeal a decision by Egypt's Attorney General to include 17 of its senior members in a newly minted "terrorists" list, a lawyer of the Islamist movement said Sunday.

The Muslim Brotherhood will appeal a decision by Egypt's Attorney-General to include 17 of its senior members in a newly-minted "terrorists" list, a lawyer of the Islamist movement said Sunday.

"The defense team will discuss the details of the [Attorney-General's] decision to lodge an appeal at the relevant court," lawyer Abdel-Moneim Abdel-Maksoud told The Anadolu Agency.

He added that Brotherhood lawyers had yet to obtain a detailed version of the Attorney-General's decision to carefully study it before lodging the appeal.

Earlier on Sunday, Attorney-General Hesham Barakat issued a decision to include Brotherhood supreme guide, Mohamed Badie, and 16 other Brotherhood leaders – all of them involved in trials in Egypt – in a list of "terrorists."

The decision was made in the light of the "Terrorist Entities Law," which was approved by the Egyptian President in February.

State television said the 16 Brotherhood leaders included former supreme guide, Mohamed Mahdi Akef, and the head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Saad al-Katatni.

The law assigns Egypt's top prosecutor with the mission of preparing a list of terrorist entities.

According to the law, an entity is designated as "terrorist" when the courts issue a ruling against them proving this charge.

This is the first time the Attorney-General includes any names in the list since the approval of the law in February.

The Brotherhood was designated as a "terrorist" organization late in 2013. The movement came under a heavy crackdown from Egyptian authorities soon after the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi – a Brotherhood leader himself.

Morsi was ousted by the military in July 2013 after only one year in office following protests against his presidency.

He currently faces separate trials on multiple criminal charges, including espionage and jailbreak.
