A fraud warning came from the Center for Combating Disinformation ahead of the age verification practice that will start on social media on November 1. DMM called for caution against fake links targeting citizens' personal and financial information with messages such as “Your account will be closed” and “Verify your age immediately.”

The Center for Combating Disinformation (DMM) warned citizens against scammers taking advantage of the age verification regulation on social media, which will enter into force on November 1, 2026. It was stated that personal and financial information may be attempted to be obtained through fake messages containing phrases such as “Your account will be closed” and “Verify your age immediately”.

A warning has come against fraud attempts targeting citizens ahead of the age verification regulation on social media. In the statement made by DMM, it was reported that malicious individuals may try to obtain users' personal and financial information by misleading them through fake SMS, email, and social media links.

AGE VERIFICATION WILL BE DONE THROUGH E-GOVERNMENT

According to DMM's statement, within the scope of the new regulation aiming to protect children in the digital environment and ensure the security of personal data, age verification will be carried out only with an “age verification token” obtained through the e-Government Gateway.

It was stated that identity information will not be transferred to social media platforms in the system; only information on whether the user meets the specified age limit will be transmitted.

DEADLINE FOR EXISTING ACCOUNTS IS MARCH 31, 2027

The application will be valid as of November 1, 2026, only for newly created social media accounts. The age verification process for existing accounts will continue until March 31, 2027.

DMM emphasized that messages such as “If you do not verify today, your account will be closed”, which aim to create panic, should not be trusted. Citizens were asked to be careful against links aiming to obtain their personal and financial information and to carry out age verification procedures only through official channels.
