Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu shared data about Turkey's internet and social media usage. According to the numbers, Turkey ranks 36th in terms of internet adoption and 49th in following social media influencers worldwide. It is also noteworthy that the average person in Turkey spends 7 hours and 6 minutes on social media per day.

The Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, reported that 86.5% of the Turkish population uses the internet, 67.4% are social media users, and 93.8% have mobile connections. Uraloğlu evaluated the April data of the Digital 2024 Global Overview and Turkey Report prepared by We Are Social and Meltwater organizations, which report digital data worldwide every year, in a written statement. Uraloğlu stated that the global mobile phone usage rate exceeded 69% in 2024, and as of this year, 5.65 billion people worldwide use mobile phones.

AFTER COVID-19, SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE INCREASED BY 35% WORLDWIDE

Uraloğlu reported that the number of unique mobile users increased by 2.4% last year, reaching 133 million.

Uraloğlu pointed out that internet usage has shown a significant increase worldwide, stating that 67.1% of the world's population, or 5.44 billion people, will be online in 2024.

Uraloğlu emphasized that the global number of internet users increased by 3.4% compared to the previous year. Uraloğlu stated that the number of social media users worldwide has increased by nearly 35% since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and nearly 1 billion new users have joined in the past 3 years. He stated, "Although the growth in the number of users slowed down significantly last year, it continues to increase. The number of users, which was 1.7 billion in 2013 and 3.46 billion in 2018, reached 5.07 billion in April, an increase of 5.4% compared to the previous year."

Uraloğlu stated that Turkey ranks 36th with a 86.5% internet adoption rate according to the population, and continued his statement as follows: "When it comes to the time spent on the internet in our country, we rank 19th worldwide with an average of 7 hours and 6 minutes per day. 86.5% of our population uses the internet, 67.4% are social media users, and 93.8% have mobile connections. According to the report, the average download speed for cellular mobile internet is 37.66 megabits, and the average download speed for fixed internet is 41.90 megabits. The main reasons for internet usage in Turkey are finding information, being informed about news and events, researching how to do something, conducting product and brand research, and staying in touch with family and friends."

TURKEY RANKS 49TH IN FOLLOWING SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS

Uraloğlu reported that Instagram ranks first in monthly social media usage per user in Turkey with 21 hours and 24 minutes, followed by TikTok with 20 hours and 54 minutes, and stated, "In Turkey, the profiles followed on social media are primarily friends, family, and acquaintances. They are followed by brands we have purchased or want to purchase, television shows or channels, entertainment content, influencers, and parody accounts. Turkey ranks 49th in terms of following social media influencers compared to other countries, with a rate of 11.7%."

Looking at the percentage of internet users worldwide who make online purchases every week, Uraloğlu stated that Turkey ranks 3rd with 64.6%, and added:

"Factors such as free delivery, easy return policy, coupons and discounts, fast and easy payment, and customer reviews are the most important reasons for citizens to turn to online shopping. When users who discover new brands, products, and services were examined, it was determined that 36.8% discovered these brands through social media advertisements. This ranking is followed by search engines, television and application advertisements, and brand or product websites."
