U.S. President Donald Trump announced in his "tariff letters" sent to the European Union and Mexico that a 30% customs duty will be applied to products sent to the U.S. from these countries starting August 1, in addition to sector-specific tariffs. In his letters, Trump also threatened that this rate would be increased in the event of retaliation.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, shared on his social media platform letters he sent to the European Union (EU) and Mexico regarding tariffs.

"WE WILL REQUEST A 30% TARIFF"

In his letter to the EU, Trump emphasized that despite having a significant trade deficit, they agreed to work with the EU, indicating that it should be more balanced and fair. Trump stated that the EU needs to move away from the long-term, large, and permanent trade deficits caused by its tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers.

Trump said, "Starting from August 1, we will only request a 30% tariff on EU products sent to the US, separate from all sectoral tariffs on the EU. If you want to open your previously closed trade markets to the US and eliminate your tariff and non-tariff policies and trade barriers, perhaps we can consider making a correction in this letter."

"WHAT MEXICO IS DOING IS NOT ENOUGH FOR BORDER SECURITY"

In his letter to Mexico, Trump reminded that customs duties are being applied due to the fentanyl crisis, stating, "Mexico is helping to secure the border, but what they are doing is not enough."

Trump's 30% Customs Duty Application to the EU and Mexico

Trump pointed out that Mexico has not been able to stop the cartels that are still trying to turn North America into a "drug trafficking playground," stating, "Clearly, I cannot allow this to happen. Starting from August 1, we will impose a 30% tariff on products sent from Mexico to the US, separate from all sectoral tariffs."

"IF MEXICO SUCCEEDS IN FIGHTING CARTELS, WE WILL CONSIDER MAKING A CORRECTION"

Trump argued that the only issue they have with Mexico is not just the flow of fentanyl, noting that the trade deficit with this country poses a significant threat to the US economy and even national security. The US President stated, "If Mexico is successful in fighting cartels and stopping the flow of fentanyl, we will consider making a correction in this letter."

THREAT OF 'TARIFFS WILL INCREASE' IN CASE OF RETALIATION

Trump stated in his letters that companies from these countries would not face any tariffs if they produce in the US, adding that they would expedite the necessary permit processes for this.

In the event of retaliation, Trump announced that the customs duty rates set at 30% would be increased, stating, "These tariffs may be increased or decreased depending on our relations with your countries."
