In the city of Dhahran in eastern Saudi Arabia, an administrative building belonging to Saudi Aramco, one of the world’s largest oil companies, was the target of an attack. While a fire broke out in the building, Reuters reported that damage occurred on the top three floors of the structure hit by a ballistic missile. It was announced that no loss of life or injuries occurred in the attack. The incident occurred during a period when mutual attacks between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen were intensifying.
OIL GIANT’S BUILDING TARGETED
The Saudi Ministry of Energy announced that one of the administrative buildings belonging to Saudi Aramco in the city of Dhahran in the east of the country was targeted on the evening of Tuesday, October 13.
In a statement made by the ministry, it was stated that after the attack a limited fire broke out in the building, and teams intervened at the scene and took the necessary security measures. Officials reported that no loss of life or injuries occurred in the attack.
REUTERS: MISSILE DAMAGED THE TOP THREE FLOORS OF THE BUILDING
According to a report by Reuters based on company sources, a ballistic missile hit an office building located in Aramco’s main compound in Dhahran.
While it was reported that the top three floors of the building were damaged in the attack, it was reported that explosion sounds were heard around the facility. The compound also contains a center that plays an important role in managing Aramco’s operations, including its oil fields, pipelines, refineries, and export terminals.
AIR DEFENSE ACTIVATED AGAINST HOUTHI MISSILES
The Saudi-led coalition announced that, at the same hours, a ballistic missile directed by the Houthis toward Dhahran was neutralized by air defense systems. Coalition Spokesperson Turki al-Maliki stated that fragments of the intercepted missile fell on a residential area in Dhahran.
Officials also announced that three unmanned aerial vehicles north of Riyadh and another ballistic missile directed at the Al-Ahsa region were intercepted. However, it has not become clear whether the missile reported to have hit the Aramco building was the same munition as the missile the coalition announced it had shot down.
4 PEOPLE INJURED IN RIYADH
The attacks in the region were not limited to Aramco facilities. The Saudi Civil Defense Directorate announced that fragments of two Houthi missiles intercepted by air defense systems in Riyadh fell on residential areas. It was reported that four people, two women, one man, and one child, were injured in the incident, and 15 homes were damaged.
TENSION BETWEEN SAUDI ARABIA AND THE HOUTHIS IS ESCALATING
According to the Associated Press, the attack coincided with the same period as air operations carried out by the Saudi-led coalition against Houthi targets in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
While the Houthis announced that they would respond to Saudi Arabia’s military operations, Aramco’s center in Dhahran had previously been among the threatened locations.
The Saudi administration, meanwhile, announced that it would take measures against attacks threatening the country’s security and maritime navigation in the Red Sea.
HAS OIL PRODUCTION BEEN AFFECTED?
While it was reported that the attack caused damage to Aramco’s administrative building, there is no verified statement indicating that a disruption occurred in the company’s oil production or exports.
Developments in the region are being closely followed with regard to the security of energy facilities and the strategic routes used in oil shipments.
