On the second day of the ongoing NATO summit in Ankara, Russia targeted Kyiv with its third ballistic missile attack in the past week. The attack killed one person and injured two. Although Ukraine's air defense neutralized most of the drones, it failed to stop the ballistic missiles. As part of the NATO summit, Zelenskiy, who is set to meet with Trump, is expected to request new air defense systems from the U.S.
On the second day of the NATO Leaders Summit hosted by Turkey in Ankara, all eyes were on critical meetings between leaders, while news of a new attack from Russia on Ukraine emerged.
Ukrainian officials announced that the Russian army carried out a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv during the night. It was reported that the third attack targeting the Ukrainian capital within the past week exploited a critical shortage of U.S.-made air defense interceptor missiles in Ukraine.
BALLISTIC MISSILES COULD NOT BE STOPPED
According to data from the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 169 unmanned aerial vehicles and 5 ballistic missiles into the country overnight. Although air defense systems managed to neutralize over 80% of the drones, they could not stop any of the 5 ballistic missiles used by Russia.
It is stated that ballistic missiles can only be neutralized with U.S.-made air defense interceptors due to their high speed and steep flight trajectory.
CASUALTY IN KYIV
Kyiv Military Administration Head Tymur Tkachenko announced that one woman lost her life and two people were injured in the attack.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko also reported that fires broke out in a storage area and a non-residential building in two separate districts on both banks of the Dnieper River due to the attacks.
KHARKIV ALSO TARGETED
Russia's attacks were not limited to Kyiv. Ukraine's second-largest city, Kharkiv, also came under missile attack. Local authorities reported damage to private residences and a church.
ZELENSKY WILL SEEK FURTHER SUPPORT FROM TRUMP
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump as part of the ongoing NATO Summit in Ankara.
It was stated that Zelensky will bring up the need for U.S.-made air defense interceptor missiles during the meeting, which are required to stop Russia's ballistic missile attacks.
The Ukrainian leader had recently been requesting additional support from Washington, noting that only these systems can neutralize Russia's ballistic missiles.
TRUMP: WAR COULD END SOON
U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that he spoke with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin before the summit in Ankara, said he believes the war could end soon. Trump said in a statement in Ankara, "I believe this war can hopefully be resolved soon."
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the war would continue and continued to demand that the remaining part of the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine be ceded to Russia.
It is reported that Russia, whose ground offensive has slowed in recent months, has instead intensified air strikes on Ukraine. Since the beginning of July, 60 people have lost their lives in attacks on Kyiv and its surroundings alone.
