Among the thousands of people paying their respects in front of the body of Pope Francis in the Vatican, the act of some visitors taking selfies with the coffin has caused anger and outrage.

The body of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, is being displayed at St. Peter's Basilica for a traditional three-day ceremony. While approximately 50,000 people paid their respects, the sharing of selfies taken by some visitors in front of the open coffin on social media has drawn significant backlash.

In a photo shared on Instagram, a woman is seen smiling at the camera, with the Pope's white skullcap and red robe clearly visible in the background as he lies in the coffin.

Janine Venables (53), who waited in line for eight hours to visit the body, said: "It was forbidden to take photos in the Sistine Chapel, but here people are pulling out their phones and taking selfies with the coffin. This is really bad taste, and I'm surprised no one has stopped them."

In official images, the crowd surrounding the simple coffin can be seen raising their phones to take photos and videos. Some visitors extended selfie sticks to capture better angles, and even nuns were spotted taking pictures with their cell phones.

This situation disrupted the moment of silent reflection and respect that is part of a centuries-old tradition during the visit. A source from the Vatican stated: "It would be good for people to remember where they are and show a little respect, but there’s not much that can be done."

Due to the heavy influx of visitors, St. Peter's Basilica remained open throughout the night. Visitors are waiting in line for an average of about 5 hours.

Leaders from many countries, including the UK, the US, France, Ukraine, and Ireland, will be present at the funeral ceremony to be held on Saturday. Representing the UK will be the Prince of Wales, and President Donald Trump will represent the US.

In accordance with Pope Francis's will, he will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome, unlike the traditional burial place for popes.
