According to the new regulation published in the Official Gazette, it will now be mandatory for labels to indicate which animal the products are derived from. The regulation aims to prevent misleading representations of non-animal parts as artificial, vegan, and synthetic leather to consumers.

The regulation of the Ministry of Trade regarding consumer products containing animal parts has been published in the Official Gazette. Accordingly, it will now be mandatory to indicate on the labels which animal the product is derived from. The label and packaging of items containing animal parts such as cow, sheep, or pig skin will need to specify which animal they are obtained from.

PREVENTION OF MISLEADING ADVERTISEMENTS

The regulation will prevent misleading promotions of non-animal parts using terms like artificial, vegan, and synthetic leather. Information will be provided in Turkish in a way that is easily visible, readable, and will not mislead consumers before the purchase process.

TO COME INTO EFFECT IN 2 MONTHS

The regulation will cover product groups under the responsibility of the ministry, such as textiles, gloves, shoes, bags, wallets, belts, watches, jewelry, stationery, furniture, carpets, and toys that contain animal parts. The relevant communiqué will come into effect in 2 months.

550,000 TL FINE FOR PIG SKIN

The Advertising Board, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Trade, imposed a fine of 550,000 lira on a world-famous shoe brand for using pig skin. Although the product contained the expression "natural leather," no information was provided that pig skin was used. The board also decided to suspend the relevant advertisement.
