The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, announced that the lifting of immunity for five Members of Parliament has been requested as part of a corruption investigation concerning the Chinese technology giant Huawei.

In the European Parliament, the lifting of the immunity of five Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) has come to the agenda as part of a corruption investigation allegedly linked to the Chinese technology giant Huawei. The request has been sent to the legal committee.

The debate continues in the European Parliament regarding allegations that some lawmakers attempted to illegally influence Huawei's decision-making processes in Europe.

IMMUNITY OF 5 MPS MAY BE LIFTED

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced the request for the lifting of the immunity of five MEPs in the Parliament's General Assembly, as requested by Belgian authorities. Metsola stated that the matter has been referred to the European Parliament's Legal Committee.

Among the names mentioned in the investigation are Italian MEPs Fulvio Martusciello, Giusi Princi, and Salvatore de Meo from the European People's Party (EPP); Maltese Daniel Attard, a member of the Socialist group; and Bulgarian MP Nikola Minchev from the Renew Europe group.

SEARCHES WERE CONDUCTED IN OFFICES

The Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office has charged eight individuals with "active corruption," "money laundering," and "membership in a criminal organization" in an investigation that began two months ago. Searches were conducted in some offices of the European Parliament in mid-March.

IT IS ALLEGED THAT THEY INFLUENCED THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES OF THE CHINESE COMPANY

At the center of the investigation is the allegation that Huawei attempted to illegally influence decision-making processes in Europe. Chinese technology companies have long been on the radar of Western countries due to security concerns, particularly regarding telecommunications infrastructure.

The European Parliament is expected to decide in the coming weeks whether to lift the immunity of the relevant MEPs.
