In the Tuşba district of Van, more than four earthquakes occurred within one hour. Speaking about the earthquakes, Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan stated, "The M4.2 earthquake today is very ordinary. The public is still haunted by the fear of the 2011 M7.2 earthquake, so the community gets startled and tense with every small quake. I would be surprised if a major earthquake follows."
According to the data from the AFAD Earthquake Department, today in the Tuşba district of Van, earthquakes of magnitudes 3.2, 3.6, 4.1, and 3.2 occurred within 1 hour. While no negative situation was experienced, the earthquakes caused a brief panic among the public. Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan made a statement regarding the earthquakes from his X account.
"I WOULD BE SURPRISED IF A BIG EARTHQUAKE COMES AFTERWARDS"
Prof. Dr. Ercan stated that Van is located in a zone where the Arabian Shield is squeezing from the north, Iran is pushing from east to west, the North Anatolian fault is present, and the active Bitlis Volcano chain is located to the north. He mentioned that the 4.2 magnitude earthquake is very normal. Ercan noted that the public has not been able to escape the fear of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 2011, saying, "The society gets startled and tense with every small earthquake. I would be surprised if a big earthquake comes afterwards."
