FROM THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the University College of Northern Cyprus (UCNC) is not one of the universities recognized by the Higher Education Council, and that the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu did not transfer to UCNC in 1990, as it was not among the universities eligible for horizontal transfer. The indictment noted that only Eastern Mediterranean University was recognized by the Higher Education Council among the higher education institutions operating in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, and it was reported that the horizontal transfer quotas were unlawfully increased, some students were unlawfully removed from the list, and new students were added to the list, with 54 people being admitted to a department that had a quota of 3.

The indictment stated that numerous fraudulent actions were carried out regarding both the higher education institutions that would accept applications and the students whose applications would be evaluated, noting that no language proficiency test or qualification exam was conducted for the students whose applications for horizontal transfer to the English Business program were accepted, and that students applying for horizontal transfer from abroad referred to individuals involved in the process such as 'rector, dean, board members, faculty secretary, members of the horizontal transfer commission' as references.

It was stated in the indictment that the suspect's father, Prof. Dr. Ersin Güredin, who works at Istanbul University Faculty of Business, went to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus with academic leave, and that he misrepresented his return as a permanent return from abroad, benefiting his son Eren Güredin from the foreign transfer process. It was also noted that a student named Necati Eren Güredin was registered in the student registry of Eastern Mediterranean University as a student, contrary to the truth, just like the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu, although he graduated from University College of Northern Cyprus (U.C.N.C.), and that a person working as the head of student affairs at Eastern Mediterranean University stated in a declaration taken as 'knowledgeable' that there was no record of Ekrem İmamoğlu at the school, and therefore this person did not enter this school. Despite the knowledge of Istanbul University that only Eastern Mediterranean University is recognized by the Higher Education Council among the educational institutions established in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, it was reported that during İmamoğlu's horizontal transfer to Istanbul University, he was falsely registered in the student registry as a student of Eastern Mediterranean University, and that with this action, both the officials of Istanbul University and the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu knew that the institution named University College of Northern Cyprus was not recognized by the Higher Education Council, yet it was shown that the suspect had transferred from an institution with equivalency.

The indictment stated that the documents submitted to the university by the suspect Ekrem İmamoğlu during the horizontal transfer process consisted of a promotional brochure belonging to University College of Northern Cyprus and a transcript, and that despite it being clearly understood that these documents did not belong to Eastern Mediterranean University, Istanbul University registered the suspect as a student of Eastern Mediterranean University, and that a false official document was prepared with an open fraud, creating a document that was formally correct but false in content.

The indictment noted that there was no information or finding that Ekrem İmamoğlu had studied at Eastern Mediterranean University at any stage of his life story, yet many written and visual media outlets, including the official website of IBB, included information and statements that the suspect had transferred from Eastern Mediterranean University, and that the fundamental reason for this situation was that during the horizontal transfer registration to Istanbul University, the suspect was shown as if he were a student of Eastern Mediterranean University.

It was noted that İmamoğlu acted in a way that would create a different perception in the public, and that all these issues were clearly and explicitly asked during the statement, but the suspect avoided making explanations by leaving the relevant questions unanswered. It was also stated that he fraudulently submitted the documents he received for the purpose of graduate studies to Istanbul University, for military service to the Ministry of National Defense, and to the Supreme Election Council. The prepared indictment requested that Ekrem İmamoğlu be sentenced to imprisonment for a term of 2 years and 6 months to 8 years and 9 months for the crime of "forgery of official documents in a chain".
