Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union in Germany and a member of parliament, was elected as the country's new chancellor after successfully obtaining enough votes in the second round of voting in the Federal Assembly.
The new government crisis in Germany has officially been resolved. The country's new Prime Minister is Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union.
Merz, who failed to secure enough votes in yesterday's 'confidence vote' in the German Federal Parliament to be elected as Prime Minister, was elected today in the second round.
WHAT HAPPENED?
After it was announced that Merz did not reach the required 316 votes to be elected in the first round, the Speaker of the Parliament, Klöckner, had suspended the session. While there are 630 members of parliament in Germany, the Christian Democratic Union, led by Merz, is supported by the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) led by Lars Klingbeil.
