According to meteorology experts, Turkey is entering a harsh cold wave starting from November 24. Rapidly falling temperatures are expected in Istanbul, along with increased precipitation on November 27-28. Due to the La Niña effect, winter is expected to bring more pronounced cold and snow potential, especially during January and February.

While fog and haze are prevalent in the interior and eastern regions, air temperatures are above seasonal norms. However, experts warn that a sharp drop in temperatures will occur across Turkey starting from November 24. Istanbul is among the cities that will be most affected by this process.

Turkey is preparing for a significant change in weather towards the end of November. While fog and haze are reducing visibility in the early hours of the day in the interior and eastern parts, temperatures are still above seasonal norms. However, meteorology experts warn that cold weather will rapidly increase its impact starting from November 24.

LA NINA EFFECT HAS MADE THE WEATHER WAVY

Recent early snowfall in high areas has brought the unstable structure in the atmosphere back to the agenda. Meteorology Expert Dr. Güven Özdemir stated in his assessment to EkolTV that the expected cold weather at the end of November has arrived 7–10 days early. Özdemir summarized the noticeable sensitivity in the atmosphere this year with the words, "Fluctuations in jet streams have increased, pressure changes have accelerated. The atmosphere is more reactive this year. Cold-warm transitions are experienced with sharp fluctuations within a few days."

COLD SHOCK FOR ISTANBUL: 18 DEGREE DROP

The main change in Istanbul, which has been between 20–23 degrees with the south wind throughout the week, will occur starting from November 24:

  • November 24: Daytime 18°C
  • November 27–28: Daytime 13°C
  • Night: Drop to 8°C

A noticeably chilly weather is expected in Istanbul.

NOVEMBER 27–28: RAINFALLS STRENGTHENING

Meteorologists are particularly warning for November 27–28:

  • The likelihood of rainfall will increase across the Marmara region
  • The system entering from the west may lead to regional heavy downpours
  • Mixed rain may be seen in the high areas of Central Anatolia

LA NINA AND THE 2025–2026 WINTER SCENARIO

Moderate La Niña signals have been observed in the Pacific since September. According to international analyses, the indirect effects of La Niña in Turkey may be more pronounced this winter.

According to Dr. Özdemir:

  • The likelihood of strong snowfall for Istanbul in December is low
  • The main snowfall scenario will strengthen in January-February
  • A permanent snow cover in coastal areas seems difficult again

Turkey appears to be making a rapid entry into winter with this cooling trend that started at the end of November.
