TRUMP: WE WILL HELP MAMDANI
Trump, who had harsh criticisms for Mamdani during the election campaign and after his election, showed support in front of the cameras. Trump said, "We may have our disagreements, but we will help Mamdani."
TRUMP HAD THREATENED TO DEPORT MAMDANI
Trump had referred to Mamdani as a "communist lunatic." He also threatened to deport Mamdani and cut off funding for New York.
Previously, Trump, in an interview with Fox News, stated regarding Mamdani, "I think he should treat me well. I am the one who has to approve many things that come to him," calling on Mamdani to "respect Washington."
After the announcement of the estimated results of the mayoral election, Trump claimed that the elections were conducted "fraudulently," saying, "Watch what is happening in New York, you will see terrible things."
NEW YORK ELECTIONS
34-year-old Mamdani, born in Uganda, became "the youngest and first Muslim name to take the helm of the largest city in the US in the last century," according to unofficial results of the elections held on November 4.
According to CBS News data, more than 2 million people voted in the election. This was "the highest turnout rate recorded since 1969." In the election, Mamdani received 1 million 39 thousand votes.
Mamdani will take over the New York City Mayor's office when Eric Adams, who assumed office on January 1, 2022, completes his term on January 1, 2026. The city has a population of nearly 9 million.
