President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who is on a working visit to Turkey. WELCOMED WITH AN OFFICIAL CEREMONY
The two leaders proceeded to discussions after presenting their delegations during the official welcoming ceremony. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Communication Director Fahrettin Altun, as well as Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, were also present at the meeting.
THE 'NORMALIZATION PROCESS' ON THE TABLE
According to a statement from the Presidency's Communication Directorate, the meeting addressed steps that could be taken within the framework of the normalization process between Turkey and Armenia, as well as the peace and dialogue process in the South Caucasus and regional developments.
PEACE AGREEMENT BETWEEN AZERBAIJAN AND ARMENIA
During the meeting, President Erdoğan emphasized the importance of the agreement reached in peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the current context. He stated that Turkey would continue to provide all kinds of support to efforts aimed at the development of the region with a "win-win" understanding.
ISRAEL'S ATTACKS ON IRAN
President Erdoğan stated that Turkey is using all diplomatic means to establish stability not only in the Caucasus but throughout the region, and that he continues to engage with leaders to mitigate the risks posed by the cycle of violence initiated by Israel's attacks on Iran.
TURKEY-ARMENIA RELATIONS
There are no diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia. The borders between the two countries have been closed since 1993. Ankara and Yerevan have been holding talks at the level of special representatives since 2022 to open the border to citizens of third countries and normalize bilateral relations.
The first meeting regarding the normalization process between the two countries was held on January 14, 2022, in Moscow between representatives of Turkey and Armenia. In a meeting held on July 1, 2022, in Vienna between the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey responsible for the normalization of bilateral relations, Ruben Rubinyan and Ambassador Serdar Kılıç, an agreement was reached to allow citizens of third countries to cross the Armenia-Turkey land border and to initiate direct cargo flights between the two countries as soon as possible.
IT HAD BEEN 2 YEARS SINCE THE LAST CONTACT
The last contact between President Erdoğan and Pashinyan took place on June 5, 2023. On that date, Pashinyan visited Turkey to attend Erdoğan's inauguration ceremony, marking the first visit by an Armenian leader to Turkey since 2009.
