In a fire that broke out on the third floor of an apartment building in Bursa, the bodies of three people, including one baby, who lost their lives were sent to the Forensic Medicine Institution for autopsy. While the families waited to receive the bodies, Mikail Kaplan, the son of 81-year-old Berguzer Kaplan who passed away, said, "Due to the ceilings being made of styrofoam, the dripping plastics caught my mother's hair on fire."
The fire broke out yesterday around 11:00 PM in the apartment on the third floor of the 4-story Emek Apartment located on Atılgan Street in Saadet Neighborhood, Karacabey district, allegedly due to the melting of a television plug that was tampered with. As the flames quickly spread, neighbors alerted the authorities, and numerous fire, medical, and police teams were dispatched to the scene. The fire, which spread to other floors, was brought under control by the intervention of the teams.
BODIES OF 3 PEOPLE REMOVED FROM THE BURNED HOUSE
Firefighters conducting an investigation in the house found the lifeless bodies of Berguzer Kaplan, Hasan Emir Efe Çorapçı (2), and Müyesser Ar (88). The bodies of the three deceased were taken to the Bursa Forensic Medicine Institution for autopsy after the prosecutor's examination.
“THE POLYSTYRENE DRIPPED ON MY MOTHER”
While relatives waited to collect the bodies in front of the Bursa Forensic Medicine Institution, Mikail Kaplan, the son of the deceased Berguzer Kaplan, described the moments:
“Due to the polystyrene ceilings, the dripping plastics caught my mother's hair on fire. My sister was in the kitchen at that moment. She wet a towel and went to intervene in the fire. My mother went out to the balcony, helplessly waiting for help. However, she could not escape. She could not hand my little niece over from the balcony either. My niece also passed away with them. By the time we arrived, everything was over. My sister could only save 2 people in the house. All the others burned.”
“THE AUNT WITH ALZHEIMER COULD NOT SAVE THE CHILDREN”
Hüseyin Uzer, the headman of Saadet Neighborhood, who witnessed the fire, said, “The fire broke out around 11:00 PM. The fire teams intervened early. Citizens also tried to help as much as they could. Due to the door not opening because of the fire, 2 of our aunts and one child lost their lives. One of the siblings managed to get to the balcony and asked the elderly aunt to hand over the small child. However, the aunt did not understand because she had Alzheimer’s and did not give the child. It is claimed that the fire started because the curtains caught fire. Normally, there were 7 or 8 people in the house. Some of the others were downstairs. Some managed to escape during the fire. One of the deceased was a guest, while the others were those who stayed in the house. The fire spread to the upper floor, but there were no casualties as no one was living there,” he said.
