The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, stated that the number of shipments, which was 681.3 million in the same period of the previous year, increased by 9.6% in the second half of 2024, reaching approximately 746.68 million. He expressed, "Thus, the total postal cargo transported in 2024 exceeded 1.38 billion, marking an 8.3% increase compared to 2023, breaking all-time records."
Uraloğlu made a statement regarding the "Turkey Postal Sector Market Data Report" published by the Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTK) for the second half of 2024. He reported that the number of authorized service providers in the sector is 52, and 62 authorizations have been granted to these service providers, of which 25 are national and 37 are local. He noted that the province with the most authorizations at the local level is Istanbul, with 24 authorizations, followed by Izmir with 5 and Ankara with 4.
"OUR POSTAL SECTOR PROVIDES EMPLOYMENT FOR OVER 122 THOUSAND PEOPLE"
Uraloğlu pointed out that as of the second half of last year, a total of 10,992 postal agencies and branches were operating across Turkey, with 1,955 located in Istanbul, 753 in Ankara, and 576 in Izmir, and that the postal sector provides employment for over 122 thousand people. He emphasized that they evaluate the traffic and volume in the sector under the headings of "communication shipments" and "postal parcels/cargo." Uraloğlu stated, "The communication shipments in our country's postal sector reached 136.56 million in the second half. Thus, by the end of 2024, communication shipments will reach 269.37 million." He also mentioned that the share of intercity shipments among all communication shipments in the second half was 86.1%, indicating that the provinces with the highest delivery of communication shipments were Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa, and Antalya, in that order.
RECORD IN POSTAL CARGO
Uraloğlu drew attention to the continuous increase in the number of other postal shipments, referred to as "postal parcels or cargo," excluding communication shipments, stating, "The number of shipments, which was 681.3 million in the same period of the previous year, increased by 9.6% in the second half of 2024, reaching approximately 746.68 million. Thus, the total postal cargo transported in 2024 exceeded 1.38 billion, marking an 8.3% increase compared to 2023, breaking all-time records." Uraloğlu reported that this increase is due to the rapid growth of e-commerce in recent years, emphasizing that this situation has positively affected Turkey's postal market. He highlighted that, as with communication shipments, the share of intercity shipments also holds significant importance in postal parcels and cargo shipments, stating, "In the second half, more than 78% of the shipments fall into the intercity category. During this period, the provinces with the highest delivery of postal parcels and cargo were Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, and Kocaeli, in that order."
"80% OF SHIPMENTS ARE DELIVERED WITHIN TWO DAYS"
Uraloğlu noted that with the growth of e-commerce and the increase in postal parcel/cargo shipment volume in recent years, the rapid delivery of shipments has climbed to the top of users' expectations, stating: "The postal sector, evolving from sender-centric to recipient-centric, is shaped within the framework of user expectations, as it is in the world. In our country, when examining the delivery times of domestic postal shipments, we see that approximately 3% of shipments are delivered on the same day, while 80% of shipments are delivered within two days after the day they are accepted."
POSTAL SERVICE PROVIDERS INVESTED 12.7 BILLION LIRA IN THE SECTOR
Uraloğlu emphasized that the postal sector has rapidly grown as a concrete result of investments made in both e-commerce and transportation and communication fields, stating that as postal traffic increases, the budget allocated by service providers for investment has also increased to meet this demand. He reported that the total investment amount made by postal service providers in the sector during the second half of 2023 was approximately 7 billion 115 million lira, and this figure is expected to exceed 8 billion 648 million lira in the second half of 2024, reaching 12.7 billion lira in 2024.
