Volkswagen has recalled 43,881 vehicles produced between 2023 and 2025 for a free software update and battery check due to the risk of overheating and fire detected in its ID.4 electric SUV models.

The German car manufacturer Volkswagen has initiated a widespread recall covering the model years 2023–2025 due to a safety risk identified in its popular electric SUV model ID.4. Approximately 43,881 vehicles will be directed to authorized service centers due to the risk of overheating and potential fire hazards of their high-voltage batteries.

According to information shared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it has been determined that the high-voltage battery in these vehicles can overheat under certain conditions, posing a fire risk. Volkswagen has decided to launch a comprehensive safety campaign due to this risk.

WARNINGS AND FREE REPAIRS FROM THE GROUP COMPANY

As part of the recall, a battery software update will be performed for the affected ID.4s; if deemed necessary, battery packs will also be replaced free of charge. Volkswagen dealers will not charge any fees while providing services to vehicle owners.

It has been determined that alignment errors in the battery cell modules of 670 vehicles, particularly from the 2023 and 2024 model years, could increase the risk of fire. Additional safety measures are recommended for these vehicle owners until the service procedures are completed.

TEMPORARY SAFETY MEASURES FOR OWNERS

Volkswagen and NHTSA recommend temporary measures for owners, such as parking the vehicle outdoors after charging, avoiding charging indoors at night, refraining from using DC fast charging stations, and limiting the battery charge level to 80%. It has been emphasized that these measures will enhance safety until the service visit is completed.

IDENTIFIED RISK AFFECTS THE U.S. MARKET

The recall decision particularly affects models sold in the U.S. market and has once again highlighted the importance of safety standards in the automotive industry. The ID.4 holds a significant place in Volkswagen's electric vehicle portfolio, and this comprehensive recall program has been launched as part of the brand's safety-focused approach.
