Images captured at the Hangzhou Safari Park in eastern China revealed the horror of an attack that unfolded before the eyes of visitors. During the show, a giant black bear suddenly attacked its caretaker, and the events were recorded moment by moment on camera.
The footage shows the bear making a sudden lunge forward while walking on its hind legs, knocking the caretaker to the ground and attempting to bite him. Nearby staff members rushed in panic to help the caretaker and struggled to pull the bear off him.
One staff member extended the metal hoop of a basketball hoop towards the bear. When the bear bit into this hoop, the caretaker narrowly escaped a fatal injury.
Following the incident, the park management announced that the black bear show had been completely canceled.
"Xiong Er can't resist food... It's my fault."
The attack on the caretaker occurred at the end of the show. Both the caretaker and the bear escaping without injury was seen as a great stroke of luck. However, visitors reacted to the park management due to the shortcomings in stage safety.
Speaking after the attack, the caretaker stated that he had known the bear named Xiong Er for years and said:
"Xiong Er is very fond of food. That day, I had his favorite carrots and apples with me. When he caught the scent, he got too excited and that's why he attacked."
According to the caretaker's explanation, the bear did not attack intentionally, but rather due to the smell of food.
The caretaker's words continued:
"Thank you to everyone who is concerned about me. We are both fine. This incident showed me that I need to be much more careful while working with him."
The Bear Made a Second Lunge
After the initial intervention, the bear attempted to attack again. This time, the staff had to use physical force to stop the animal. The incident occurred on December 6.
The footage quickly spread on social media, and thousands of people argued that the use of animals in shows should be completely banned.
The park management announced that the health status of the bear involved in the attack would be regularly monitored, and emergency protocols would be thoroughly reviewed.
