Recently, heavy rainfall in Aydın has caused flooding in the Büyük Menderes River. Approximately 2,000 acres of agricultural land between İncirliova and Germencik districts have been submerged.
The increasing rainfall in Aydın has led to floods. Due to the intermittent heavy rains in the region, the water level of the Menderes River rose and overflowed, submerging the agricultural lands between İncirliova and Germencik.
THE MENDERES RIVER OVERFLOWED, CONCERN IS GROWING
As a result of the flooding, approximately 2,000 acres of land, including wheat fields, were damaged. Producers in the region are worried as a large portion of the cultivated areas is covered with water, and it has been learned that the extent of the damage will become clear after the water recedes.
Teams from the State Water Works (DSI) that arrived in the affected areas have started damage assessment work. The flood point in the irrigation canal, which is said to have burst and caused the flooding, is being attempted to be closed using stones and soil with heavy machinery. It has been reported that the teams are making intense efforts to control the water.
"HALF OF THE CULTIVATED AREA IS UNDER WATER"
Germencik Agricultural Chamber President Şahabettin Çapakçıoğlu, who conducted inspections in the region, stated that there are 45,000 acres of cultivated land in the plain, of which 30,000 acres consist of wheat and barley. Çapakçıoğlu said, "We prayed a lot for rain because the reservoir levels are very poor. The expected rains have fallen. In the end, we believe we will achieve good results when we plant our crops. It is said that the rains will continue.
Unfortunately, there have been floods in certain areas of the Menderes River. Our Regional Directorate of State Water Works is continuing its work intensively. Hopefully, the maintenance and repair work will be completed soon, the water level will drop, and we will continue with our products in the fields. There was wheat and barley planting here. 80% of these lands were planted with wheat. Right now, almost half of it is under water. But we see that the level has dropped a bit. Hopefully, the waters will recede within 2 or 3 days," he said.
