CHP Chairman Özgür Özel was attacked with a punch after the memorial ceremony held for DEM Party Istanbul Deputy and Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, at AKM.

It has emerged that Selçuk Tengioğlu, who carried out the attack, had made a death threat against Ekrem İmamoğlu on December 16, 2024, while claims that the individual’s background check was conducted and that 'no negative situation was found' have caused a wide public outcry.

THE COMMUNICATION DIRECTORATE DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS

Claims reported in some media outlets stating, "The background check of S.T., who attacked Özgür Özel and was previously convicted of intentional murder, has been deleted," were denied by the Communication Directorate's Disinformation Combat Center.

"THE ALLEGATIONS ARE DISINFORMATION"

In a statement from the Communication Directorate, it was noted that "It has been determined that S.T., who attacked CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, made a death threat against Ekrem İmamoğlu on December 16, 2024. The claims mentioned in the news that the individual’s background check was conducted by security forces after this threat and that 'no negative situation was found' are disinformation.

It has been established that the record shared in the news content belongs to a security company affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Participation Coordination Directorate, not to the security units. It was determined that the individual named S.T. was not a wanted person following the background check conducted after the threat in 2024, that he had a record for 'Intentional Murder,' and that there was no record in the archives of the Counter-Terrorism Department (TEM), and the background check information was recorded in the minutes. Contrary to the claims, there is no situation in which the individual’s background check has been deleted. Please do not give credence to baseless claims aimed at manipulating the public," the statement included.
