Beylikdüzü Mayor Murat Çalık, who previously overcame cancer twice and lost 18 kilograms while in prison, underwent surgery after a mass was detected in his neck and lymphoma symptoms were observed.
The Mayor of Beylikdüzü, Mehmet Murat Çalık, who was arrested in the investigations against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), has undergone surgery. Çalık, who previously overcame cancer twice and lost 18 kilos in prison, had a mass detected in his neck. The pathology results indicated signs of lymphoma.
MANSUR YAVAŞ ANNOUNCED
Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş announced that Çalık has undergone surgery. In his statement, Yavaş used the following expressions: "Our Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık has undergone surgery. It is unacceptable to ignore the fact that a person who has fought serious illnesses (acute leukemia and lymphoma) twice in the past is facing these diseases again after prison. I emphasize once again; non-custodial prosecution is the rule, and detention should be the exception. These practices must be abandoned immediately." he said.
Çalık was arrested on March 23 and transferred from Silivri (Marmara) Prison to İzmir Buca Type F Prison on June 4. His lawyers requested his release, stating that Çalık suffers from acute leukemia and lymphoma and that the prison conditions are not suitable for his health.
İMAMOĞLU PROTESTED
The arrested and suspended IMM President Ekrem İmamoğlu reacted strongly to Çalık's detention and his health problems. İmamoğlu made the following statement:
"What are you waiting for to release Mehmet Murat Çalık? You arrested my brother, who has undergone cancer treatment twice, based on the false statements of individuals involved in crime from head to toe. You exiled him to a distant prison so that he cannot meet with his family and lawyers. You committed this oppression knowing that he has health problems. He lost 15 kilos inside, and the cancer he fought for years has come back to find him."
