The Peruvian Congress has removed interim President Jose Jeri, who replaced former President Dina Boluarte.

THEY REMOVED THE INTERIM PRESIDENT

In the vote held during the Congress session in the capital Lima, Jeri, who is right-leaning, was removed with 75 votes in favor, 24 against, and 3 abstentions.

ALLEGATIONS OF SECRET MEETINGS AND IRREGULARITIES

According to the Peruvian press, Jeri's removal was justified by semi-secret meetings he held with Chinese businessmen working with the state and allegations of irregularities in the hiring of some public officials.

The conservative parties, which hold the majority in Congress, initially supported Jeri but withdrew their support after the investigations launched against him drew public backlash.

THE 8TH PRESIDENT REMOVED IN 10 YEARS

With Congress making this decision two months before the elections, Jeri has become the 8th president to be removed from office since 2016.

The Peruvian Congress will elect a new deputy to preside over the Assembly today. The elected person will temporarily assume the presidency until July 28. In its most recent vote, Congress had dismissed former President Dina Boluarte on October 10, 2025, for "permanent moral incapacity."
