The driver G.G., who drove the CHP bus onto the police on April 23 in Ankara, was released by the judicial authorities with judicial control measures of "prohibition of leaving the residence" and "prohibition of leaving the country" for the crime of "resisting multiple public officials." G.G.'s statement has emerged.
"I COULDN'T STOP BECAUSE MY BRAKING DISTANCE WAS LONG"
In his statement, G.G. indicated that on the day of the incident, they wanted to go to the old Parliament in Ulus with the official bus allocated to the party leader, along with approximately 17 members of parliament and 2 deputy party leaders. He said, "To keep up with the program schedule, we used the road in front instead of the main road. The police wanted to stop the bus. However, I couldn't stop due to the long braking distance because of the weight of the bus. Since we were late for the program, the members of parliament and our party deputy leaders told me to continue on the road. However, after a while, I stopped the vehicle," he said.
"WE WENT TO OUR DESTINATION ESCORTED"
Continuing his statement, G.G. said, "Our members of parliament got out of the vehicle and spoke with the police. Later, an escort was assigned to the vehicle by the traffic branch director's order, and we went to our destination escorted. The traffic branch director who gave the order also came to our destination. About 3 days ago, I was called to the police station for a statement. However, I couldn't come to give a statement because I was on duty in the party and outside the province. But I told them that I could also give a statement in Mersin. When I came to Ankara, I called the relevant police teams and said that I could give a statement, and I came to give a statement of my own accord," he said. G.G. also stated that he had no intention against the police or the state.
CRIMINAL COMPLAINT FROM THE POLICE
In a press release regarding the matter, the General Directorate of Security stated, "Despite the action ban decision taken by the Ankara Governorship, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, a party's sound and broadcast bus attempted to enter the Ankara Courthouse area, which is 'prohibited for entry and presence.'
The driver did not comply with our police officer's 'stop' warning; he used the vehicle like a weapon and drove it towards our officer without showing any signs of slowing down. Our police officer narrowly escaped being run over.
Our General Directorate of Security has filed a criminal complaint against the individual named G.G. who used the vehicle for charges of 'intentional killing,' 'intentional injury,' and 'endangering traffic safety.'" it stated.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On April 23, the CHP announced that they would march from the 1st Assembly to Anıtkabir for National Sovereignty and Children's Day, but the Ankara Governorship did not grant permission. Despite the denial of permission, the CHP did not change the starting point of the march. On April 23, G.G., the driver of the CHP bus carrying CHP members of parliament and party deputy leaders, drove the bus onto the police without complying with the police's "Stop" warning. An investigation was initiated against G.G. by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The suspect was referred to the court for arrest after being detained. The duty court released G.G. with judicial control measures of "prohibition of leaving the residence" and "prohibition of leaving the country" for the crime of "resisting multiple public officials."
