In Anamur district of Mersin, one of Turkey's important production centers, strawberry production continues due to the mild climate conditions even in winter. The district, which ranks first in banana production, also sees many producers growing strawberries.
STRAWBERRY HARVEST CONTINUES DESPITE WINTER
In Güleç neighborhood of the district, strawberry production has become an important source of income for the local residents. The seedlings that emerge in specially prepared covered areas in the gardens are later uncovered. Despite being winter, open-air strawberry harvesting continues in the region.
"THE COST OF ONE DECIMAL IS 150 THOUSAND TL"
Rasim Uktar, who produces in a 10-decare garden, pointed out that they struggle to get a return. Uktar emphasized that Anamur strawberries are very beautiful with their natural flavor and expressed his hope for a good future for the producers. Highlighting the cost of strawberries, Uktar said, "The cost of one strawberry seedling is 15 TL. The cost of planting, sowing, and the drip irrigation system for one decare of strawberries is approximately 150 thousand lira. Right now, our strawberries are finding buyers at 130 lira."
Approximately 260 thousand tons of the 650 thousand tons of strawberries produced in Turkey are grown in Mersin. Currently, strawberries are being sold in the market and supermarkets for between 250 and 300 TL, while they are finding buyers in the garden for between 100 and 130 lira.
