Turkish theologian and writer Ali Rıza Demircan argued that Turkey needs to assume a leadership role in the Islamic world again and that the revival of the caliphate could be an important step towards this goal.
"IF TURKEY CANNOT BECOME THE LEADER OF THE ISLAMIC WORLD, IT MAY FACE A SURVIVAL ISSUE"
In his column published in Mirat Haber, Demircan emphasized that the caliphate is a political, not a religious institution, suggesting that Turkey could revive the caliphate with a democratic governance approach without compromising the principle of secularism. Demircan wrote, "Turkey is obliged to do this. Because if developing Turkey cannot become the leader of the Islamic and Turkish world, it may face a survival issue, let alone grow."
"THE LIBERATION OF GAZA AND JERUSALEM AND THE CALIPHATE ARE TWO GREAT OPPORTUNITIES"
Demircan considered the liberation of Gaza and Jerusalem and the re-establishment of the caliphate as two significant opportunities for Turkey to assume a leadership role in the Islamic world.
"OUR PRESIDENT IS NOT A MUST, BUT IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY"
Additionally, Demircan expressed that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could be a strong candidate for the caliphate position as a respected leader in the Islamic world. He stated, "To be honest, our President is a great opportunity for our country due to his beliefs, personal life, and the acceptance he has in the Islamic world. If a caliphate election were to be held in the Islamic world, our President could win. Our President is not a must, but it is an opportunity."
