Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro confirmed his phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. Maduro stated that the meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and peace.
In an event broadcasted on state television VTV, Maduro stated that his phone conversation with Trump took place in a "sincere" atmosphere.
'YES TO PEACE, NO TO WAR.'
Maduro said, "Yes, Mr. President, we had a phone conversation with Trump. I would like to express that the tone of the conversation was respectful, even sincere. If the meeting between the President of the United States and the President of Venezuela represents a step towards a dialogue based on respect, I welcome dialogue and diplomacy. Because we will never give up searching for opportunities for dialogue and peace." Maduro called on the U.S. with English phrases, saying, "Welcome to dialogue, welcome to diplomacy. Yes to peace, no to war."
"I CANNOT SAY WHETHER THE MEETING WENT WELL OR BAD."
Trump, in a statement to reporters, confirmed that the conversation with Maduro took place, saying, "I cannot say whether the meeting went well or bad." It was reported that President Trump told Venezuelan President Maduro that he "should immediately resign and leave the country." According to a report by the Miami Herald, based on sources familiar with the conversation, the phone call between Trump and Maduro had quickly stalled last week.
MADURO ASKED, TRUMP REJECTED!
Sources claimed that Maduro demanded to retain control of the Venezuelan military in exchange for allowing free elections. They also reported that Maduro requested a "global amnesty" for himself and his close associates regarding the "alleged crimes" they committed, while Trump rejected these demands and conveyed a message to Maduro that "safe passage could be provided for him, his wife Cilia Flores, and his son (out of the country), but it needed to happen immediately."
