Tensions rose in the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Council after Mehmet Ustaoğlu's remarks directed at İzmit Mayor Fatma Kaplan Hürriyet, asking, "Is there a rental of a member of parliament there?" Hürriyet responded, "Rude. Who do you think you are calling me rented? What would you do if someone said these words to your wife or daughter?" The chairman's comment further escalated the tension.
The tension rose during the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality's council meeting in April. CHP Group Deputy Chair and İzmit Mayor Fatma Kaplan Hürriyet became angry at the words directed at her by AK Party Council Member Mehmet Ustaoğlu while criticizing rental vehicles and tents during the discussions of the activity report.
"WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF THEY SAID THESE WORDS TO YOUR WIFE OR DAUGHTER?"
Reacting to Ustaoğlu's words, "Is there a rental for deputies there?", Hürriyet said, "Rude. Who are you to call me rental? You are a rude and shameless council member. Mr. President, will you warn this shameless man within your authority? Who are you to call me rental? What would you do if they said these words to your wife or daughter? Isn't it shameful? What kind of people are you?"
TENSION PEAKED
Mustafa Kocaman, the Mayor of Kartepe who was presiding over the meeting, said after Hürriyet requested an intervention, "Calm down, I didn't hear the word. You also called a project a monstrosity, Fatma Hanım." Upon this, Hürriyet, who became even more furious, responded, "I called a project, a sidewalk a monstrosity. Is it the same thing?" When someone from the audience shouted, "Is calling a sidewalk a monstrosity the same as calling a woman rental?", President Kocaman asked Mehmet Ustaoğlu to take back his words. Ustaoğlu also stated that he took back his words.
