Heavy rain lasting 10 minutes caused flooding in the Havza district of Samsun. Many vehicles were swept away as streams overflowed in the district. Stranded people experienced dangerous moments. While education was suspended for one day in the district where power outages occurred, 12 people with minor injuries from the flood were taken to the hospital.
Heavy rain was effective in the Havza district of Samsun. The water level rose in Hacı Osman Creek and Tersakan Creek, which pass through the district center. Cumhuriyet Square, Çay, and Bahçelievler neighborhoods were flooded. Many homes and workplaces were submerged. The floodwater was observed to have risen to the ceiling of ground-floor businesses at some points.
CLUNG TO LIFE ON TOP OF A VEHICLE
While many homes and businesses were flooded, dozens of vehicles were swept away by the floodwaters. During the flood, the calm demeanor of a young man stranded on top of a car drew attention. It was learned that the citizen, who waited to be rescued for a while, was safely evacuated from his location by the intervention of the teams.
GOVERNOR TAVLI: NO LOSS OF LIFE OR INJURIES
Governor Orhan Tavlı, who conducted inspections in the flood zone in Havza district, stated that many workplaces and vehicles were damaged as a result of the overflow of Hacı Osman Creek in the district center, saying, "I extend my best wishes to the business owners and our citizens. We have no loss of life so far. We have not received any reports of injuries either. However, there is serious damage to workplaces. Cleaning and damage assessment work continues in the field. Teams from Samsun Metropolitan Municipality, SASKİ, AFAD, State Hydraulic Works, and Havza Municipality are continuing their work in the region. Our law enforcement agencies have taken the necessary security measures. All teams, along with our health teams, are working in coordination. Cleaning efforts continue uninterrupted. Hopefully, we will heal the wounds as soon as possible."
CITIZENS DESCRIBED THE DISASTER
The vehicles and workplaces of tradesmen suffered great damage in the flood. Bahadır Kaya, one of the citizens who experienced the disaster, said, "We have never seen such a thing before. We were caught off guard, we were stranded. The rain suddenly poured down. Backhoes came and rescued us. All the shops were damaged. Havza is currently paralyzed."
Bayram Şenses stated, "Everything was damaged. The water level almost exceeded our height. It swept the vehicles away."
SCHOOLS SUSPENDED IN HAVZA
The heavy rainfall that was effective last evening led to water overflows and a flood disaster in the district. While streets and avenues were submerged under water, material damage occurred in some workplaces and homes. In line with the decision taken by the Samsun Governorship, schools across the district were suspended on Wednesday, May 13.
Samsun Governor Orhan Tavlı, Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Halit Doğan, Vezirköprü District Governor and Havza Deputy District Governor Özgür Kaya, Havza Mayor Murat İkiz, and related institution officials conducted inspections in the areas affected by the flood. The delegation coordinated the ongoing work on-site and conveyed their best wishes to the citizens.
Governor Orhan Tavlı stated that the state stands by the citizens affected by the heavy rain with all its means and expressed that the teams continue their work in the field without interruption.
12 INJURED PEOPLE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
Additionally, 12 people injured in the flood were taken to the hospital. It was reported that 12 people, injured in various parts of their bodies with no life-threatening risks, some came to Havza State Hospital on their own while others were brought by healthcare workers.
