THE 2011 MURDER WAS THE FIRST CLUE Meticulous work carried out under the coordination of the Department of Unsolved Crimes Investigation, established under the Ministry of Justice, by the Hatay Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and the Hatay Provincial Police Department Public Order Branch Homicide Bureau shed light on two murders committed years ago.
Mehmet Uygur The process began in 2011 when Mehmet Uygur was killed and buried in an empty plot of land in the Dörtyol district. During an operation carried out by police teams in 2018, it was determined that the perpetrators of Mehmet Uygur's murder were his wife Hatice Uygur, brother-in-law Y.T., and daughter-in-law Selbi Uygur. While Mehmet Uygur's body was reached during excavations, Hatice Uygur and Y.T. were arrested and sent to prison. However, the daughter-in-law Selbi Uygur, for whom an arrest warrant was issued, could not be found anywhere despite all searches.
Selbi Uygur THE DEPARTMENT OF UNSOLVED CRIMES STEPPED IN Upon the possibility that Selbi Uygur, who was thought to have been a fugitive for many years, might actually have been a murder victim, the Department of Unsolved Crimes Investigation reopened the case in May 2026. Statements from mother-in-law Hatice Uygur and her brother Y.T., who were in prison, were retaken by the special team formed.
THEY KILLED THEIR DAUGHTER-IN-LAW FOR FEAR SHE WOULD TALK Cornered during interrogation, mother-in-law Hatice Uygur and her brother Y.T., along with their accomplice O.Ç., confessed to the horrifying truth. The suspects confessed that they killed their 32-year-old daughter-in-law Selbi Uygur in 2012 because they feared she would tell others about the Mehmet Uygur murder they committed in 2011 and be unable to cover up the incident.
HER BONES WERE FOUND AFTER A 15-DAY EXCAVATION
Following the suspects' showing of the location, teams started excavation work with construction machinery in the designated orange grove. As a result of meticulous excavation work lasting approximately 15 days, clothing belonging to Selbi Uygur and pieces of a human skeleton were seized underground. The bone remains found were sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for definitive identification. DNA analysis confirmed that the bones belonged to Selbi Uygur, who had been sought as missing for 14 years.
