In Aceh, Indonesia, an unmarried young couple was found guilty by a Sharia court for violating Islamic law after kissing during a TikTok live stream. The couple was each lashed 21 times in front of about 100 spectators, and it was reported that they were arrested and tried following the incident.
A 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman living in Aceh, the only region in Indonesia that applies Islamic law, were prosecuted for kissing during a TikTok live broadcast.
According to The Guardian, the Sharia Court found the unmarried couple guilty of violating Islamic law and sentenced each to 21 lashes with a rattan cane.
THEY WERE FLOGGED IN PUBLIC
Following the court's decision, the couple was flogged 21 times each in a public execution. Approximately 100 people watched the punishment.
The couple was arrested in April after they livestreamed their kiss in a car in Banda Aceh on February 27 on TikTok, and the footage was reported to authorities.
THE ONLY REGION IN INDONESIA THAT APPLIES SHARIA
Aceh is the only region in Muslim-majority Indonesia where Islamic law is implemented. The country's secular central government granted the region the authority to apply religious law in 2006 as part of a peace deal that ended separatist conflicts.
