It has been reported that 23 people were abducted in an armed attack on an orphanage in Nigeria's Kogi state.
THEY RAIDED THE ORPHANAGE
Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, stated in a statement that an armed attack was carried out on an orphanage in Lokoja city. Fanwo reported that 23 people in the orphanage were abducted in the attack.
15 OF THE ABDUCTED WERE RESCUED
Fanwo stated that security forces launched an operation immediately after the attack, and 15 people were rescued during the operation. Fanwo shared the information that operations are ongoing to find the other abducted individuals in the area.
Nigeria has long been facing attacks from armed gangs as well as the terrorist groups Boko Haram and ISWAP, the West African branch of ISIS, in various parts of the country.
Although the penalty for kidnapping in the country is death, kidnapping for ransom is frequently encountered. Armed individuals often target villages, schools, and travelers in the north of the country to demand ransom.
