Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the comprehensive consolidation works initiated in 2025 on the monumental statues at the Mount Nemrut Tumulus, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, continue this year as well. In the interventions carried out with nanotechnological solutions and lime-based mortars, the original appearance of the artifacts is preserved, and the works are proceeding in line with the five-year program.
Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy made a post on his social media account regarding the conservation works carried out at the Nemrut Mountain Tumulus, one of the most important sacred sites of the Commagene Kingdom.
"WE CONTINUE TO PRESERVE NEMRUT'S THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD HERITAGE WITH THE MEANS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY"
Minister Ersoy stated that the consolidation works initiated in 2025 continue in line with the determined roadmap, using the following expressions in his post:
"We continue to preserve Nemrut's thousand-year-old heritage with the means of science and technology. The consolidation works we started last year are continuing uninterruptedly this year as well, in line with the roadmap we have determined.
Within the scope of the comprehensive conservation works, which we are carrying out for the first time on this scale at Nemrut Mountain, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, we are strengthening the monumental statues with nanotechnological solutions and filling all cracks with lime-bound mortar that prevents water ingress into the structure of the stones.
With these meticulous interventions, carried out without causing any change in the original appearance of the artifacts, we are protecting Nemrut's unique values against time and harsh climatic conditions.
With the works carried out by the experts of our Gaziantep Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory Directorate, the first phase of which will last five years, we will carry Nemrut, the common heritage of humanity, to future generations while preserving its authenticity. I thank all our experts and team members who contributed to this important work."
FIRST CONSERVATION WORK ON THIS SCALE AT NEMRUT
Comprehensive conservation works on this scale are being carried out for the first time at Nemrut Mountain, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987 due to its unique historical and cultural values.
Within the scope of the plan prepared in line with the research and scientific evaluations previously conducted by archaeometry experts, it is aimed to protect the monumental statues in the area against time and natural conditions.
THE TEXTURE OF THE STONES IS STRENGTHENED WITH NANOTECHNOLOGY
Within the scope of the works, consolidation processes are being carried out on the statues using nanotechnological solutions. In order to prevent water ingress into the structure of the stones, all cracks on the surfaces are filled with lime-bound mortar compatible with the stone.
The meticulously applied conservation methods strengthen the structural integrity of the stones without causing any change in the current appearance of the artifacts.
5-YEAR ROADMAP FOR THE FIRST PHASE
The first phase of the works carried out by the experts of the Gaziantep Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory Directorate is progressing in line with a five-year program.
With the studies in which scientific analyses and modern conservation techniques are used together, it is aimed to transfer the monumental heritage of Nemrut Mountain, thousands of years old, to future generations while preserving its authenticity.
