A 41-year-old man in Mississippi died after being buried under hot asphalt that spilled on him due to a malfunction in his truck.
The man, named Darrell Sheriff, was checking the hydraulic line of the truck he was supposed to pick up from AJ Materials in Jackson on Monday when the rear door of the vehicle opened and hot asphalt poured on him.
The Jackson Police Department arrived at the scene around 10:30. Police Chief Joseph Wade stated at a press conference that they found Sheriff "buried under hot asphalt."
Wade said, "Some people at the scene tried to help him," adding, "They said he was fighting for his life, but his injuries were too severe for him to survive."
The police chief described the incident as "horrific" and "tragic," using the phrase "the kind of incident no one wants to see."
The Police Department stated that they are conducting a detailed investigation, but noted that Sheriff’s death is being considered an accident. Wade explained, "It appears there was some kind of malfunction with the dump truck."
The Jackson Police Chief mentioned that family members who were present during the incident and identified their loved ones are experiencing "trauma," and he conveyed that they described Sheriff as "a good, hardworking family man."
Wade continued, "As the holidays approach, losing this gentleman who was just trying to make a living... His family is truly very sad, but we will continue to support them and be with them in our prayers."
