The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced that a boat capsized in the Andaman Sea and there is no news from approximately 250 Rohingya Muslim migrants.

NO NEWS FROM THE 250 PEOPLE ON THE CAPSIZED BOAT

In the Andaman Sea, located between the eastern coasts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean and the western coasts of Myanmar and Thailand, a boat carrying Rohingya Muslim migrants capsized last Sunday. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that there were approximately 250 people on the boat and no one has been heard from.

UNHCR Spokesperson Babar Baloch explained, "We have confirmed the news. The information we have indicates that a boat sank in the Andaman Sea with about 250 people," adding that there is still no concrete trace regarding the fate of those on the boat.

Rohingya Muslims, who are subjected to pressure and attacks by the military, militia groups, and Buddhist nationalists in Myanmar, take to the sea in unsuitable boats to seek refuge in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, as well as Thailand. UNHCR estimates that since the beginning of 2024, approximately 4,500 Rohingya migrants have embarked on these dangerous journeys across the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
